FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Are greyhounds good housedogs ?

R: They are usually called "sofadogs". They are silent kind, loving and intelligents. The skin of greyhounds is very
thin and their coat isn't "oily", what explains they don't have a dog odour.

Q: Is it difficult to learn them not to do their business at home ?

R: Greyhounds are racedogs, habituated to live in kennels, that is to said they were accustomed to make their
business outside of the place they sleep. They get used to be taken out several times during a day. Doing the
same at home, it will be easy to accustome them to your house and learn them not to do their business at
        home and respect your interior.

Q: Do I need a big enclosed garden ?

R: Though recommended, it is not obligatory. Some minutes playing or racing each day, and then a long walk
are enough to enjoy your greyhound. But you always have to keep him on the leash when he is not in an
        enclosed area !

Q: I heard that only old or hurt greyhounds were retired, is it true ?

R: No. Most of greyhounds are retired when they are between 2 up to 5 years old. Certains greyhounds had
accidents like toes fractures, broken ligaments, etc. However, we shall inform you about all possible wound
we know concerning your dog. You'll adopte an athlete in good shape that will live around  10 up to 15
        years old.

Q: What are their health problems ?

R: Unlike other large dogs, they don't suffer of hip dysplasia or other congenital illnesses. A lot of them are very
sensitive to drugs and chimical produces. It is better to avoid them collar against fleas or use other cimical
produces. Like a lot of dogs they may have ticks and a vaccination make by your veterinary against
        pyroplasmose is advised.

Q: Does they need a special diet ?

R: No. It is advised to give them premium dry food with fresh water at will. They eat the same quantity than
        other dogs of this size.

Q: What is his character ?

R: Greyhound is a silent and docile animal when he doesn't race. When he can be slightly distant with a stranger
present, he is generally very friendly. He is very kind towards knowing persons and has confidence in.

Q: How is he with children ?

R: Most of the greyhounds are good friends for children old enough to know how manipulate a large dog. We
advise children of 6 years old at least.

Q: And with cats and other little animals ?

R: Some greyhounds will hunt them, other will ignore them. If you have a cat or another little animal, tell us.
Anyway you'll have to take care during the first weeks and be patient. After a time to adapt they will finish to
        get on well toghether.

Q: Why does they have muzzles on ?

R: The greyhound is a competition dog, and he may be agressive during a race, though inside, he is a good
friend, kind and docile, living only to please his master. Racing, they have muzzle for two reasons:

- the first one is to help officials to establish who win on the finishing line picture,

- the second is to protect them against bite or accidental scratch.

Q: Does the greyhound needs to take a lot of exercise ?

R: Less than we usually think. Greyhounds are sprinters more than stamina dogs. In fact, greyhound less need exercise than most of other dogs. They are happy with sevreral good walk each day, at a brisk pace and each week, a good hour of freedom when then will rice. Rest of the time, they will lie, in your divan or a soft cover !

Q: Can they stay alone a certain time ?

R: Hunt or race greyhounds never be alone, without other dogs or human around them. At the beginning it will be difficult for them to accept lonelyness. However, after a while to adapt, most of them will be able to stay alone calmly if you don't leave them too long (what is true for all other breed).

Q: Why are they always with lead on ?

R: They reach their quickness of 60 up to 70 km/h only in a few strides. As they don't have experience of cars or any other danger, and also because they are hunt dogs at signt and they have not very much scent, they can't find alone their way home again. It is the reason why you always have to put greyhounds on the leash when they are not in an enclosed garden.
