HIS PERCEPTION OF THE VICINITY

How does the dog perceive his vicinity ?

EYES :

He discerns colours in shades of yellow, green, grey, blue. He is long-sighted : he doesn't see distinctly near things. He takes an interest in every thing moving.

EARS :

If his ears are rights, he can classify number of sounds. He hears infrasonic vibrations (vibrations below the lowest frequency audible), and ultrasonic waves (vibrations upper at the higher frequency audible).

NOSE :

If we could spread his nasal mucosa on his body, it would cover a great deal of it. It is about 180 times longuer than ours. We possess about 5 to 30 millions of olfactory cell, even though the dog possess between 220 to 300 millions of it. This wonderfull smell allows him to percieve far around a lot of informations notably thanks to the pheromones. These chimical substances are in urine, excrement and sweat or are elaborated by specialized glands. They allow him to mark out his territory, sexuality, and to know when he will be attacked. We are not surprise that he is so precious in search of missing or vanished persons, by exemple in avalanche.

By his gasping he assures his thermoregulation. he perspire by digital cushions. he percieve vibrations under digital cushions that give him informations on the surrounding.

WHERE DOES HE LIKE TO BE AT HOME ?

If you plan your house and note where your dog likes to settle down, you'll see he is often above (on the bed, the sofa, the armchair) or in the corridor to supervise the coming and going, or in the half-open door.

His place is in a peripheral room of the apartment for in a crowd, the place of dogs lower in the heirarchy is peripheral.

THE MEAL :

Your dog must eat after you because the dominant dogs kill the prey and eat before to invite lower dogs too.

These advice can help your dog to understand where is his place at home. That doesn't change the affection you give to him. They are to use with dominants.

Dogs doesn't fear cold but humidity is not good for them. Put them a coat for the bigger as well than for the smaller.

When you have baby, introduce him to your dog and leave this one to familiarize him with the newborn. Quickly he will protect him instead of being jealous. In any case introduce always the persons coming home. He will accept them on his territory.

Explain your children that the shout and gestuculations and the fact to run in front of a dog make him nervous and risk to cause an accident.

Lastly, muzzle a dog that bites kindly, without frighten him, to inhibit this bad habit. If his aggressivity is not due to a health problem, physical or psychic, with a good training everything will retrun to normal.
