THE TESTS OF CAMBELL
1975

These tests are done with puppies about seven month old to determine there nature.

They must appened very quickly without lull,
Without anything distracting the puppy surrounding.
The puppy musn't know the person who does the tests.
The puppy is handle softly and you musn't speak to him.
If you test a few puppies, clean the place where you do the test in order that the next one doesn't smell the precedent puppy.
during every test, observe the reactions of the puppy and note them using the scale of values that propose CAMBELL (see the grid below)

1° TEST OF ATTRACTION TOWARDS YOU

Put sofly the puppy on the ground and move away from him in the opposite direction of the door by which you enter with him in the room.

Squat down turning towards the puppy and clap your hands without say anything.

Observe if the puppy is attracted to you.
 

2° TEST OF APTITUDE FOR TO FOLLOW

You are near the puppy, began to move away from him normally making sure that he saw you to start.

Observe how he follow you.

3° TEST OF ACCEPTANCE OF FORCE

Squat down. Put the puppy on his back and keep him firmly your hand on his sternum during 30 seconds.

Note the reactions of the puppies.
 

4° TEST OF ACCEPTANCE OF DOMINATION

Stay squat down and lie the puppy in the position of the sphinx.

Stroke him on the head and then along the neck and the back preventing him from getting up.

Do it during 30 seconds to see clearly the reactions of the puppy.
 

5° TEST OF LIFT UP POSITION

Stay squat down near the puppy, lift him up taking him under the sternum with your two hands.

Hold him in position during 30 seconds and note the reactions of the puppy.

INTERPRÉTATION OF RÉSULTS :

1. Dominant aggressive : 2 or more than 2 index DD, the others must be index  D

He can be educated to defend you but the trainer must be an adult experienced. This one cannot be the dog of a layman.

2. Dominant extrovert    : 3 or more than 3 index D

It is advised to adopt this dog in a family with children for he can be aggressive. He can be excellent for education.

3.  Well-balanced            : 3 or more than 3 index E

He is very adaptable everywhere, with children as well as elderly people, even new masters never adopt dog before him.

4. Submissive               : 2 or more than 2 index S, particularly with one or several
                                            index I

  • He needs to be treated with kindness for if he is afraid he would become dangerous and would bite.

5. wrongly socialized  : 2 or more than 2 index I, particularly with an index i in
                                           test 4.

They are dogs wrongly socialized with the persons. They are unpredictable. They can be sometimes aggressive sometimes frightened. An education appropriated can settle this problem.

However it is preferable to socialize your dog between about six weeks and three month. Carry him in a  rucksack in public places. Avoid that someone touch him and don't put him on the ground , for his health, if he is not vaccinated.

Sometimes you can produce contradictories results. So do the test again later in another place.
