A COLLAR OR A HARNESS

A few people in my customers assure me that their dog didn't pull on the lead when they wear a harness instead of a collar.

Actually a dog that is chained up rush forward rather than to move back and try to take off his collar with his paws. He seldom knows to do differently when something strangle him.

Effectively a collar strangle a dog when a harness  is more comfortable because it doesn't touch the neck but surround the thorax.

I wish to show you some anatomical drawing and you will see the effect of a collar or a harness on the neck of a dog.

I'm not a veterinary. I only wish raise a few problems concerning respect of the animal and of his body health.

We know that muscles, nerves... are connected to the brain and the body of the dog is supported by the frame.

The frame is strong. However the smaller jolt given on a collar, notably by a layman, cause an impact in the head that shock the dog.

This shock is like a slap.

FIG.2.2 The cervical vertebrae (left lateral view).

fig2.19 The formation of the external jugular vein and its course in the cervical region (left lateral view)

Often when someone wants his dog to sit down, he will give several jerks on the collar if the dog doesn't comply with the order.

You will note the place of the mandibular salivary glands on the anatomical drawing above fig. 2.19.

Even if the muscles that surround the neck are powerful (as you can see on the anatomical drawing fig. 2-46 ) it is nevertheless the case that every jerk the master give on the collar causes a strangulation and an impact very unpleasant on the mandibular salivary glands of the dog.

Except the mandibular salivary glands there are other delicates parts in the neck. For exemple the jugular vein. There is also the auditory system.

On the other hand, the organs that are in the thorax are distinctly better protected : inside the rib cage a membrane protected notably the lungs. Then come the skeleton and the powerful muscles that surround it, as you will see on the figures following. Even you give a jerk a little to strongly on the lead, you will not hurt your dog.
