GREYHOUND IN NEED: THE FILE

Our main goal: SPAIN

People devoted to greyhounds cause in Spain are all voluntary that do all to bring love and care to each hurt or ill animal that arrive in shelters. Some were found dead, other died after the event, in spite of their efforts, some have recover health, and some of them have already beds and sofas in loving home in France and Europe.

Why so much abandonment ?

In spain when hunt season end in January, most of "galgueros" (Greyhounds owners) don't want to keep their dogs during 9 months meanwhile next season in September. Anyway they raised puppies for next hunt season. So greyhounds are abandoned in large number from the month of January, that mean thousand dogs through all Spain.

Worse region are:

Castilla y Leon,

Madrid,

Toledo,

Ciudad Real,

Granada,

Extramadura

and Cuenca.

More, during hunt season, if a greyhound become "sucio" (dirty), more precisely, if following the hare he cut to take a shorter way, the dog is disqualified.

Traditionally, the hunter tell: "Ese no come mas en mi casa" (Tis dog can't eat anymore in my house), and the dog can be hang in the more horrible  mannerthat be in order that the owner found again his lost honour.

The association "Greyhound in need" G.I.N. consacres all his time and his energy to end these atrocious traditions.

Now pictures

The following pictures were taken in Medina del Campo, near Valladolid. They are very hard, but they are the expression of reality, a pitiless and shocking reality, a reality we want to change by our action:

lévrier noyé
Some Greyhounds are knocked down, other hanged or drowned.

The bodies are still their at varied states of decomposition

chienne pendue
This female has wounds on all the body. She was certainly hited before to be hanged.

She was found in the woods of Medina.

lévrier blessé au cou

We assume that she was hanged and succeeds in coming undone.
The voluntary team treats her neck wounds

Most of the hanged dogs are greyhounds.
But other breeds suffer the same lot.
(Pointers, guard dogs, retriever, lapdog)

lévrier pendu

A "galguero" (spanish hunter using greyhounds) told us dogs don't suffer when they are hanged.
Look at this picture. What do you think of ?

She was picked up wandering in the south of Madrid.
Her right forelegs was caught on a fox trap,

lévrier noir

A greyhound in his box,  to go twaitingo greyhound racing.

lévrier pattes cassées

Even with breaked or deformed legs, greyhounds must go to greyhound racing !

CONCLUSION

Unfortunately, these pictures are only few examples among all "Greyhounds in need" (G.I.N.) could see since his work began in favour of Greyhounds of Spain, in february 1997.

Hanging of Greyhounds considerably decreased in the area of Medina del Campo, but in the other hand, shelters receive each year more than 300 greyhounds abandoned during the two months following the hunt season. In the rest of Spain, Greyhounds' s hanging goes on, even they decrease in some regions. According to groups of animals protection and the Guardia Civil, this practices goes on but of discreet manner.

The action of G.I.N. is mainly :

1) To offer a sanctuary to abandoned greyhounds. This shelter located at Medina del Campo, allows physical and psychological reformatting and prepares them to their transfer to north of Europe were good families of adoption wait for them.

2) Put pression to the regionals ministry of agriculture of Spanish Provinces to, first, lead them to recognize these horrors, and, on the other hand, to draw their attention to :

a. the overproduction of greyhounds,

b. the lack of consideration of well-being of animals used for sport or hunt,

c. the financing of shelters or euthanasia (death more worthy) of abandoned dogs,

d. the promote of information about how animals are treated by men, for people become aware of these dogs are sensitive being and must be treated as they are.

3) Put pression to Regionals Department of Justice to make apply spanish laws concerning animals protection - laws that exist, but are seldom apply.

To finish

We thanks all the persons that help us in order that the voluntaries can continue their work for all the dogs. We are still a little associative structure and all our spare time is devoted to this cause. We are short of time and money, but not of devotion, perseverance and love to these dogs.
