TO GIVE A VERMIFUGE TO YOUR DOG

The veterinary Maurice LUQUET specify us in his work "LE CHIEN, morphologie, extérieur, esthétique", p.91 : "The affection of the digestive tract are numerous and various: enteritis or gastroenteritis of all sorts (parasitics, infectious, inflammatories, neoplastic (relating to neoplasia 1. Formation of a new tissue, for example : tissue repair, by scar formation, of substance loss. 2. Formation of a neoplasm [tumeur] ). Source: Dictionnaire Encyclopédique Grand Usuel LAROUSSE.) with digestives disorders: the more frequents are vomiting, diarrhoeas, constipations, intestinal stasis (stop, stagnation of an organic liquid circulating), the intestinals obstructions, the haemorrhage, etc.".

Before the birth of the puppy, his mother herself must be "desinsectiezd" as explain us the veterinary Alain FONTBONNE in his french work "FAIRE REPRODUIRE SON CHIEN OU SA CHIENNE" p.93: "The puppies can be parasitized by flat worm (or taenia)

Taenia of the dog

and by roundworm (Toxocara canis-hookworm).

The main rounds worms of the dog

The first one are transmited by the fleas. So it is necessary to completely disinfect a female, but also the floor, the walls, the carpets, all the places she will be during her pregnancy. (Don't forget the car (!), nor the other animals of the house (including the cats). Attention, you must us not dangerous substances for the pregnancy.

The roundworms are transmited to the puppies by licking of the excremetns of their sisters and brothers or of the mother but also in part during the pregnancy through the placenta.

So it is important for the female future foster mother to have an anti-parasitic treatment. The veterinary advice to give her vermifuge at the beginning of the estrus, and then 10 to 20 days before the giving birth.

Concerning the diseases, the mother must be correctly vaccinated in order to transmit protectives antibodies in her first milk (or colostrum). In risk zones or risk breeding, you can be lead to vaccnate the mother just before the service. The veterinary doesn't advice to vaccinate during the pregnancy, though the danger be minimal.

Some type of vaccine are not absolutely without risks during this period, it is better to abstain from it."

If you are not a breeder and you want a litter of your female ask advice to your veterinary who will guide you during all this periode. If you read french, you can also discover the new work of the veterinary Alain FONTBONNE: " L'ELEVAGE CANIN AU QUOTIDIEN".

In his work "LE GUIDE PRATIQUE DE L'ELEVAGE CANIN", the veterinary Philippe PIERSON clarify p. 233 about the worming: "...reproduction cycles and transmission of the parasitics the more frequents for puppies in dog breeding, it is to say ascaris, trichuris, hookworms, ténia, giardia and coccidiums."

ASCARIDIOSIS

Toxocara canis is the more frequent parasitis in the dog breeding. It can cause respiratory disorder with the puppies by pulmonary migration of the larvas and digestives disorders (bloat, diarrhoeas, vomits, indeed intestinal perforation)... "Such infestation may accentuate the osteopaties of nutritional origin with the puppies of large breeds growing." Source SEMAINE VETERINAIRE N°948 of october 9th of 2001 and may be at the origin of serious humans infections (phenomenon of larva migrans with children).

HOOKWORMS

The hookworm clinically result in anemias (lack of blood. Morbid state characteriezd by a decrease of total quantity of haemoglobin in the blood) and enteritis [Inflammation of small intestine, sometime associate with the inflammation of stomach too (gastroenteritis) or the colon (enterocolitis)] serious, and even mortal when it affects puppies.

TRICHURIOSIS

Massive tricuriosis (endoscopy of the colon of a female that presents a chronic diarrhoea

The tricuriosis are very commons with dog living in pack or in kennels. They "are parasitis of large intestine (or colon) of the dog. They measure from 2cm up to 4cm, and have a rolled up shape at the tip called in french "arch of bishop". Source : the french veterinary internet site WANIMO.COM. The eggs are very strong (arround 5 years in the ground).

COCCIDIOSIS

Oocyst of coccidiosis seen with a microscope.

The coccidiosis is "a coccidial infection (pricipally infection with the genera Eimaria and Isospora." Source : "VETERINARY AND ANIMAL SCHIENCE DICTIONARY" ROY MACK - ETIENNE MEISSONNIER. The whole life cycle of this parasite is located with the enterocytes (intestinal epithelial cell) and result in destruction of intestinal mucosa. Coccidiosis are pathogenics for puppies because of the risk of diarrheas and dehydration." Source: "SEMAINE VETERINAIRE N°948 of october 9th of 1999, article of Marine NEVEUX.

AND GIARDIASIS

kystes de giardia
The excretion of the giardia cysts is intermittent. It explain the difficulties of diagnostic sometime meet with.

The coccidia and the giardia are unicellular parasites rarely pathogenics when they are isolated but they can complicate sometime at the diarrhroeas neonatals of viral, bacterial or parasitic origin.

TAENIASIS

The views you have discover comes from the very good work of  the veterinary Philippe PIERSON "GUIDE PRATIQUE DE L'ELEVAGE CANIN" that you can find in the french BOOKS :   LIBRAIRIE

Commercial pet food generally adopted by the mjority of the breeders limits nowadays possibilities of infection by dog's taenia further to ingestion of carcass or infected offal (that cause... sarcocystosis (...living creature constituted of one cell with a distinct nucleus...parasite the cycle begin with a spore...that germinated in a sporosoite (infective for of certain protozoa) vermiforme.

We distinguish two mais classes:

The coccidia

and what we cal in french "grégarines" (very large protozoas)

They leave as intestinals parasites.

Only dipylidiasis is frequently seen with dog. This flat worm is usually transmited by ingestion of fleas (intermediates hosts) or faeces with taenias's segments. The treatment vermifuge is easy but it must be accompanied by a careful desinsectization of the dogs and their surrounding that is much more restricting.

The infestation, often asymptomatic, can however cases anal itch, or to be discover in faeces as white little moving elements that look like grain of rice, or arround the anus.

We indicate about it that it doesn't exist pinworms of arthropods [...large majority of marine species (crustaceans) or grounds (insects, arachnidas] or of vertebrates, with only one host. The pinworms of human... infest the right colon." Source: Dictionnaire Encyclopédique Grand Usuel LAROUSSE.) in canin breed.

REMEMBER :

There are 3 sorts of parasites with the dog :

  • rounds worms (ascaris, trichuriosis, hookworms),
  • flats worms (taenia) and protozoas (coccidiosis, giardiasis).

No vermifuge can be effective against all sorts of these parasites. So ask your veterinary to give you the better vermifuge (that is a medicine) for your dog.

These informations are necessary essentially for breedings and persons that have sevral animals.

But don't forget to vermifuge your puppy every month up to he becomes an adult.

The adult must be vermifuged every six monts.

Think to do it also for you because you dog can transmit you ascaris.

Some worms can leave many years in the ground so, avoid sandpit where play children and sweep up the feaces of your dog in your garden or during his walk.

To have more informations about these parasites, see the french veterinary internet site WANIMO.COM, as well as the article of the veterinary Marine NEVEUX "SEMAINE VETERINAIRE N°948 of october 9th of 1999.
