THE DISEASES OF THE ELDERLY DOGS

When a dog grows old, he can be subject to different diseases :

  • of the skin and 20% à 30% of these tumours are malignants. The most frequents are :
The Histiocytomes they are rather tumours of young dogs that causes inflammations, and are most of the time benignes.
The Carcinoma are malignants tumours of the epidermis. The dogs with a skin little pigmented are subject to this tumours: the Dalmatian dog, the Beagle, the Whippet, the Bull Terrier. The solar radiations might be in the beginning of these tumours, so these dogs mustn't stay a too long time out when the sun is shining. Often, tall black dogs have these tumours at the base of the claw.
The Mastocytoma that causes allergies. The dogs the most predisposed are the Boxers, the Schnauzers, the Beagles, the Labrador retriever, the Boston Terriers.
The Melanoma.

  • Except these cancers of the skin, the dog is often subject to cerebral tumours.
  • He is also subject to lymphoma, malignant tumours of lymphoid tissue, that represent 7%¨à 24% of canine tumours. The breeds the more concerned by lymphoma are the bull mastiff, the Scottish Terrier, the Rottweiler dog, the Boxer, the basset hound, the Saint-Bernard, l'Airedale and the Bulldog Anglais.

Genetically the tall breeds are predisposed to cancer of the bones. It might be mainly the Saint-Bernard dog, the Great Dane, the Setter Irlandais, the Dobermann, the German Shepherd dog and the Golden Retriever.

For the females the mammary tumours are frequents. The sterilization before first heat counteractes the risk of cancer. The breeds the more subject to mammary tumours are the poodle, the English Springer Spaniel, the Brittany spaniel,  Setter Anglais, Pointer, Fox terrier, Boston Terrier and Cocker Spaniel.

The males can have cancer of the testicles. The monorchidism (one of the two testicles is not in the scrotum) or the cryptorchidism (the two tescticles are not in the scrotum) increase the risk of cancer.

The tumours of the anal glands are generally benignes but it is difficult to take them out. The breeds that are subject to these tumours are : Samoyède dog, Cocker Spaniels, the Beagles and Bulldogs Anglais.

6% of cancers concern buccal region.

1% of cancers concern nasal route and breeds with long muzzle.

Often elderly dogs suffer of arthritis or arthrosis.

If your dog sees regularly the veterinary, this one will treat your dog as and when required. Ask him advice.
