WHAT TO THINK ABOUT THE HAIR BEHIND THE EYES OF SOME BREEDS OF DOGS ?

For my part number of my customers compain to see their dog with hair behind the eyes to knock violently against a tree, a door or a pane of glass that he didn't see, rushing to run or to play. All of them wonder if there is a good reason to leave their dog this fringe or if they might cut it without damage his eyes.

The Doctor veterinary Didier SCHMIDT-MORAND gives us his point of view in the french veterinary review "LA SEMAINE VETERINAIRE" n°945 of september 18th of 1999:

"...some breeds of dogs keep a plentiful fringe, at the risk to cause ocular disorders...the fringe is often present and hangs down the eyes, handicaping the dog...Curiously this hair feature involves rumours: "this fringe protect the eyes of the dog" or "the fringe is a filter for the ultraviolet rays of the sun"

"Human is at the origin of this aberration because of ancestrals canins selections. How such carnivorous may survive in a natural surroundings, with a field of vision reduced preventing to hunt to eat or to provide for their family ? "Cut this fringe and you will "see" that he sees better. This remark intended particularly for the breeds that have a thick undercoat like Bobtail who, when he becomes old or if his hair is never groom, can have a fringe that dim totally his eyes.

Briard sheepdog

There is breeds predisposed to lagophthalmos (incomplete closure of the eyelids) like Pekinese, Lhasa Apso, Shi Tzu dog and other tibetan terriers that have a natural exophtalmos (protrusion (action that push an organ in anormal conditions:définition of dictionnaire encyclopédique Grand Usuel LAROUSSE) of eyeball) caused by the size of eyeball with regard to the one of the orbits.

In this case, the fringe plays two parts:

a difficulty to see,

a corneal traumatism chronic.

If the dog is subject to keratitis (inflammation of the cornea), dry or other, the cornea becomes a screen rather than a window...

Us practising veterinarians, ask to our custumers ... to cut the fringes or to put their hair up with slides or to put a bow in his hair, in order to give again sight to those that can't ask it."
